If you’ve ever wondered what chemical exfoliations do, why they are such a great step to incorporate into your routine or how to use them, here is your ultimate guide to help you on your journey to clear, glowy skin 🤩.

Its 2021 and if you’re not exfoliation, hunny you need to start ASAP!

Exfoliating away dead skin cells has long been the secret to glowing, healthy-looking skin. But unlike the harsh, gritty scrubs of the past, there’s a new generation of exfoliants that get the job done using chemical, not physical methods.

Many think that exfoliating is a harsh step and can cause more harm than good to the skin, but if done correctly and the right amount, you can see amazing results.

Exfoliation is key for healthy, glowing skin. However physical exfoliants (I.E. Sugar or granular scrubs) are becoming outdated. Being replaced with a new generation of chemical exfoliants such as AHAs and BHAs

Firstly, lets discuss AHA’s and BHA’s – a.ka. alpha – and beta-hydroxy acids— these are the two most common families of exfoliating acids that you will find in many skincare products and they are often found together (basically a match made in heaven if you ask me 😏).

AHAs:

AHAs are water-soluble acids made from sugary fruits. They help peel away the surface of your skin so that new, more evenly pigmented skin cells may generate and take their place. After use, you’ll likely notice that your skin is smoother to the touch.

Types of AHAs:

• Glycolic acid:

The most common AHA, derived from sugarcane. It is also the strongest, due to its small molecule size, but that makes it the most irritating, too. The Dr Oracle + A-Thera Peeling Sticks are an amazing targeted spot treatment which uses AHA and BHA to effectively clear pores and blackheads. We recommend using this product once or twice a week after cleansing. Simply swipe the stick in upwards motions all over the face, focusing on any blemishes and on the T-zone, nose and chin area. Allow the formula to sink in for one to minutes before continuing with the rest of your routine.

• Lactic acid:

• The second most common AHA, derived from milk. It’s a gentler alternative to glycolic acid, and is suitable for sensitive skin. The Shangpree Fresh Peeling Mask is a great product for this is formulated with a blend of lactic acid for mild exfoliation, hyaluronic acid for retaining moisture and herb complex botanicals for brightening purposes. To use, we recommend applying a generous amount to clean, dry skin (remember to avoid the eye and lip area). Gently massage in a circular motion for exfoliation. Leave the mask to work for another 10-20 mins. Rinse with warm water and for best results follow up with the Shangpree Pore Tightening Mask. Use 1-3 times a week as needed.

• Tartaric acid:

• A weak AHA derived from grapes. Instead of acting as an exfoliant, it is more often used to stabilize other acids’ pH levels. You can wear the mask while sleeping, exercising or in a relaxing bath. It’s so comfortable you won’t want to take it off and most importantly it is appropriate for All Skin Types YAY! 🥳. BHAs:

BHAs, on the other hand, are primarily used for acne and sun damage. These products go deep into your hair follicles to dry out excess oils and dead skin cells to unclog your pores. Because of these effects, BHAs are most suitable for combination to oily skin. Lower concentrations may be used to help calm sensitive skin. You may also have more success with BHAs if you wanted to reduce rosacea-related redness.

Types of BHAs:

• Salicylic acid: 

• The most common BHA, and also the strongest. However, it is not as irritating as glycolic acid (the strongest AHA) because of its large molecule size and anti-inflammatory nature. A great product is the Benton Aloe BHA Skin Toner as it is packed with skin-benefiting ingredients such as aloe and salicylic acid, this toner hydrates and preps your skin to help with the absorption of skincare products in the next step in your routine. To use after cleansing, we recommend to pour a small amount of toner onto hands or cotton pads and pat gently onto skin. Follow with rest of your skincare routine.

• Betaine salicylate: 

• A BHA comprised of salicylic acid and betaine (a hydrating amino acid derived from sugar beets). It’s a gentler alternative to salicylic acid, and according to a study by the manufacturer, is equally effective. (A 4% concentration of betaine salicylate is said to be equivalent to 2% salicylic acid.)

The WHEN Future Fresh Smooth Out sheet mask is a great product as it is soaked in a light, refreshing essence formulated with Honey Extract and Betaine Salicylate to help gently exfoliate and smooth out dry, rough skin. After cleansing, we recommend applying the mask onto the face and aligning the openings with the eyes, nose and mouth. Be sure to adjust for a good fit and leave on for 20 minutes until the essence is well absorbed.Remove the mask and discard. Massage remaining product into the face and neck. No need to rinse.

Suggestions for different skin types:

• Acne prone and oily skin : BHAs are your bestie, especially salicylic acid, as they will help treat and prevent acne while slowing down oil production and excess sebum.
• Dry and sensitive skin: Lactic acid is the best AHA as it is the most gentle but a mild BHA will do as well. Remember to always patch test first!
• Pigmentation: Both AHAs and BHAs will help target discolouration but be aware of AHAs photosensitivity. If using an AHA it might be best to use this at night only and never skip your sun protection!
• Ageing skin: Glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids have all been shown to slow down the ageing process and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Combining acids:

You can layer AHAs and BHAs together in your routine or use a product that contains both AHAs and BHAs like the Some By Mi Miracle Range or the Mizon AHA & BHA Daily Clean Toner!

No matter which acid you choose, it’s important to start at a low concentration and slowly introduce it into your routine. As well as to patch test  before applying the product to your entire face! The story behind the brand name is quite surprising- it’s inspired by the movie “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” in which Benjamin, the main character, grows younger with time. Acne, breakouts and oily skin are experienced by most people at some pint during our lives. Acne sucks and can sometimes be detrimental to your skins health and your mental health.

It’s important to remember that breakouts are normal and you should never feel self conscious about any type of breakouts, instead focus on keeping your skin healthy.

Being able to identify between the different types of acne can be essential in knowing what would be the best treatment and products to use. There are two main types when it come to acne lesions. This being inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions.

Tips to avoid breakouts:

• Ensure that you wash your face twice everyday to effectively remove any excess sebum, dirt, oil, sweat and other impurities from the skin.
• Avoid touching your face with your hands as this can spread germs and bacteria.
• We may not realise this but our phones carry a lot of germs, so ensure that you sanitize them regularly as they touch many surfaces daily.
• Ensure that you also sanitise any products which you use on your face, for example makeup sponges and brushes.
• Stay hydrated.
• Ensure that you wash your hair properly as this will aid in removing excess dirt, oil and sweat daily.

Blackheads are open comedones (comedones refer to small, skin-coloured bumps) and on top of the pore stays open. While whiteheads are closed comedones and the top of the pore closes up.

If you speak to any K-beauty fanatic they are bound to know about double cleansing and rave on about the wonders which it does to your skin. We are going to discuss what double cleansing really is, why it is important to your skincare routine as well as the common misconceptions and myths regarding this step. 

So what exactly is double cleansing?

If you are new to the world of double cleansing and feeling a bit lost, fear not. Double cleansing is a simple process. The cleansing method involved two types of cleansers, firstly an oil-based cleanser which is then followed by a water-based cleanser. In a nutshell, oil cleansers work to remove oil based impurities such as makeup and sebum and water-based cleansers work to remove water-based impurities like sweat and dirt. Thus double cleansing basically ensures that both types of impurities are removed from the skin in the most gentle way possible. With this being said, there are many misconceptions and myths which then come into the picture. 

Myth 1: ‘I shouldn’t use an oil cleanser if my skin is oily’:

Probably the most common misconception is this but in essence using an oil cleanser is even more important here. Oily skin produces a lot more impurities than dryer skin types. Using an oil cleanser is an effective way of clearing out these oil-based impurities from the skin. Not only will this remove oil-based impurities such as excess sebum and blockages but it will also aid in clearing breakouts. 

Myth 2: ‘If I don’t wear makeup then I don’t need to oil cleanse’:

ERRR FALSE! Makeup is just ONE type of oil-based impurity. Other oil-based impurities include excess sebum which is something that EVERYONE’S face produces as well as other oil-based pollutants which our skin builds up throughout the day. Oil cleansers effectively break down SPF as it removes any surface oil-based residue so that when you do follow up with your water cleanser, it can get deep into those pores and thoroughly clean your skin. So whether you are wearing makeup or not, there much more to oil cleansers than just removing your day’s foundation. 

Bottom line is that regardless of your skin type, one should be double cleansing morning and night as this will not only prevent blemishes and clogged pores but will also aid beneficially in allowing your skin to absorb all your other skincare products. So if you’re ever wondering if you should double cleanse, the answer is HELL YES! 😜

Nothing much seems to bloom and grow in winter, but pimples may just be the exception. During the colder months when your skin gets progressively dry, your body will respond by producing more Sebum. Sebum is an oil like substance which is a key factor in acne. Sebum helps keep our skin supple and moist. However, too much sebum will cause the skin cells to stick together which in turn clogs pores. For those already struggling with acne, inflammation can also be a concern during winter. This is because dry, cold air exposure is one of the many driving forces which can seriously harm the skin’s barrier and in turn promote inflammation. 

TIPS ON COMBATTING WINTER ACNE:

Hydrate💦:

A very important tip which many of us tend to forget with our busy schedules and fast-paced lives is to stay hydrated. Proper hydration aids in preventing excess sebum and oil secretion which essentially means fewer clogged pores and breakouts! 🥳

Clean pillowcases:

During the colder months, our hair and skin becomes drier which in turn tends to secrete oil on your pillowcases. Remember to change your pillowcases every 2 days which will help keep your skin crystal clear 😴.

Exfoliate:

There is no harm in exfoliating during the colder months. In fact it should be encouraged even more during these months. Exfoliation helps prevent dead skin formation which can clog your pores and result in many breakouts. PS: too much scrubbing can however make your skin more dry and lead to more breakouts so ensure that you are only exfoliating about 2-3 time a week. 

Moisturise:

Cleaning ritual:

As the weather gets colder, it is important for us to take care of our bodies both internally and externally. It is also very important for us to understand how prolonged exposure to air which is dry and cold can lead to flaky dry skin WHICH CAN ALSO spark other issues. One may ask how does winter really affect our skin’s wellbeing? Well cold weather can be harsh and tough on our skin. Low humidity levels and cold temperatures in the air tend to draw the moisture out of our skin. To fight unwanted dry skin, we will be focussing on our must haves in order to achieve ‘glass skin’ during the months of autumn & winter. 

MUST HAVES:

1. Lip mask 💋:

It’s safe to say that dry, cracked lips are a common occurrence during the colder months. Thus a lip mask is a very beneficial product to add to your routine if you do not already have one. A personal favourite of mine is the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask Grapefruit as it is ultra moisturising, leaving your lips supple and smooth.

2. Hydrating sheet masks 💦:

Sheet masks are an excellent way of bringing hydration back to the skin. The Shangpree Aroma Blend Moisture sheet mask is amazing as it works to hydrate the skin whilst keeping skin smooth and supple. The Beauty of Joseon Centella Asiatica Calming Mask is also a strong favourite as this mask contains 15% of centella asiatica extract which is amazing for soothing skin troubles. Apply whichever sheet mask of your choice for about 15-20 minutes. Thereafter remove mask and tap in any remaining product into the skin.

3. Sleeping masks 💤:

Sleeping masks are a great way to achieve hydration overnight, let the product do the work while you catch up on your beauty sleep. The Dr. Oracle Blueberry Sleeping Mask is amazing as it is enriched with 2000ppm Blueberry extract containing anti-aging ingredient Anthocyanin, which offers intensive moisturizing and skin elasticity care to sagging, tired skin. Another favourite is The Pure Lotus Leaf Extract Sleeping Mask as the lotus leaf extract is amazing at treating stressed and irritated skin. Thus leaving you with brightened complexion and hydrated skin in the morning. 4. Spot treatments for acne and blemishes:

What’s amazing about this step is that there are different options and alternatives. At night, a personal favourite of mine is the Mizon Acence Blemish Out Pink Spot. I especially love this product because it dries immediately so I don’t have to worry about product getting onto my pillow when I sleep. In addition I also love this product as it has been the only product to visibly reduce my inflamed acne breakouts nor irritate my sensitive skin. An alternative product could be the COSRX Clear Fit Master Patch. Otherwise known as ‘pimple patches’, these are amazing and convenient as the patches are translucent so you can apply them whenever (day or night 😏) We recommend first cleansing your face then applying the patches to your desired spots and thereafter proceeding with the rest of your routine.

5. SPF ☀️:

A common misconception which many have is that if you can’t see the sun then you don’t need to wear SPF. ERRR WRONG! UV rays can penetrate clouds, thus it’s important to always be well protected from skin-damaging UVA and UVB rays. We recommend the Shangpree Phyto Essence UV Sunscreen as it is a great lightweight, non-greasy daily sunscreen which is suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin. As your final step, we recommend taking a moderate amount and applying to the skin, patting in to aid absorption. It is also recommended to reapply throughout the day.

6. Face oils:

One of my absolute winter must haves has got to be facial oils. They are a great way at moisturising the skin at night as you go to bed looking like a shining disco ball and wake up with soft, hydrated skin. Meaning that this products can be used at many different stages of your routine. 7. Internal Supplements 💊:

Lifestyle modifications such as adding various supplements into our everyday routines can effectively help dry skin during Autumn/Winter. Firstly, Fish oils are a great source of essential fatty acids which have powerful anti-inflammatory and healing properties that are beneficial to the skin. Secondly, L-Glutamine as this amino acid helps skin cells function optimally for smooth, radiant, healthy-looking skin. It is also known to support the integrity of the skin, especially during times of physical injury or stress. 

8. Purifying house plants 🪴:

through simple photosynthesis, indoor plants are able to convert the carbon dioxide we exhale into fresh oxygen as well as remove toxins from the air. A few common plants which are not only purifying but also very ✨aesthetic✨ are the Philodenron plant which is the most common plant but is great as it thrives in dry air, thus meaning rather low-maintenance during colder months. The Devil’s ivy as it is ideal for maintaining clean air at home and lastly the spider plant as it works to remove harmful pollutants from the air.

9. Humidifier:

Majority of heating units/devices release hot/dry air which in turn can leave your skin itchy, dry and sometimes even flaky. Thus by using a humidifier to add moisture, it may help reduce the occurrence of dry, flaky skin. Not only are humidifiers beneficial to your skin but it can also prevent static electricity from building up as well as your light account as the air will be significantly warmer than usual.
